When someone types a keyword matching the advertiser's keyword list, or visits a web page with relevant content, the advertiser's ad are shown. These ads are called "Sponsored links" and they appear next to, and above the free results on search engines.

This advertising system is open to abuse through click fraud, while competitors may click ones ads, and so Google and other search engines have implemented automated systems to guard against this.
